She believes that a good Plastic Surgeon needs three key qualities: artistic vision, meticulous techniques, and expert knowledge. Dr. Leena Jain is sincerely committed to patient satisfaction, striving "to reform the ideal beautiful normal."

Qualifications:

Dr. Leena Jain has earned numerous degrees in pursuit of excellence in her field:

  • MBBS: M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore
  • MS – General Surgery: Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore
  • MCh – Plastic Surgery: Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore

She furthered her training in microsurgery under the mentorship of world-renowned microsurgeon, Dr. Samir Kumta, and subsequently completed two additional microsurgery fellowships:

  • Fellowship in Microsurgery and Perforator Flaps: Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea.
  • AO Fellowship in Microsurgery and Maxillofacial Trauma: Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, Germany.

Area of Interest:

Microsurgery:

Microsurgery involves joining blood vessels (arteries and veins) and nerves smaller than 2 mm in size to restore circulation, using magnification techniques. It has numerous applications:

  • Trauma and Tumor Reconstruction: Tissue (flap) is transferred from a distant site to the affected area, and circulation is restored by joining the fine blood vessels of the tissue with blood vessels in the flap transfer area.
  • Replantation and Revascularization: This involves joining completely or nearly completely amputated fingers, toes, ears, and the phallus by microsurgical reconstruction of blood vessels and nerves, thus restoring circulation.
  • Facial Palsy: Using nerve surgery and tissue transfer to the affected side of the face, symmetry of the smile can be restored.
  • Lymphedema: By connecting lymphatic channels to veins, a bypass is created to transport fluid back to the heart, thus managing chronic conditions like elephantiasis/lymphedema.
  • Adynamic Bladder Surgery/Detrusor Myoplasty: In cases where patients have adynamic urinary bladders and cannot urinate without catheterization, functioning muscle is transferred using microsurgery to the urinary bladder to facilitate spontaneous bladder emptying.

Microsurgery has numerous applications from head to toe and requires focus, patience, and perseverance.

Breast Reconstruction and Breast Cosmetic Surgeries:

Dr. Jain specializes in breast reconstructive surgeries, which involve creating a new breast after mastectomy (breast removal due to breast cancer), thus restoring a patient's femininity. She also has a special interest in breast augmentation and breast reduction surgeries. She has helped many patients through breast reduction surgery, which she believes is liberating for women in many ways.

Burns’ Deformity Surgery:

Burn scars are known to cause functional limitations depending on their location. Release of scar contractures allows normal tissue development and ensures a near-normal range of motion and function. Scar contractures of the neck, axilla, elbow, hand, and foot cause functional limitations and must be released and resurfaced with flaps for lasting results. Electrical burns can be particularly devastating, and an electrically burned hand may require multiple procedures to restore function.

Hand Surgery:

Hand surgery encompasses a wide range of procedures. Plastic surgeons perform hand surgery to restore hand and finger function and strive to make the hand appear as normal as possible. Dr. Leena Jain is considered one of the best plastic surgeons in Mumbai for her expertise in hand surgeries, including replantation, revascularization, resurfacing, bony reconstruction, contracture release, fingertip reconstruction, tendon repair surgery, nerve surgeries to restore function, and complex reconstructions of severely burned hands.

Diabetic Foot Surgery:

With a large diabetic population in India, many individuals are prone to developing foot wounds. If left untreated, many can lose their foot. As a Reconstructive Microsurgeon, Dr. Leena aims to promote ulcer healing and salvage feet to help patients regain mobility. She believes that "to save a person's feet" is her biggest achievement.

Lymphedema Surgery:

Dr. Jain also specializes in lymphedema surgery/elephantiasis, enabling patients to lead a normal life despite the weight and girth of their limbs. Elephantiasis can be effectively treated by microsurgery, greatly improving the quality of life for these patients.

Facial Palsy Surgery:

Facial palsy can significantly impact a person's daily social life and interactions, causing embarrassment and emotional distress. Patients' smiles and eye closure are affected, leading to feelings of distress and isolation. Facial palsy deformity can be corrected by microsurgery using nerve transfers in early stages and functioning muscle transfers in later stages. Subsequent muscle retraining restores symmetry to the smile.
